Having trouble figuring out who to follow on Twitter?

The microblogging service announced today it is experimenting with tailored suggestions based on the individual's person interests.

"Currently, when new users come to Twitter, we show them all almost the same suggestions for what or who to follow," Othman Laraki, Twitter's director of global growth, wrote on a company blog. "That isn't ideal."

Newbies and seasoned users alike will soon see personalized suggestions in Twitter's "Who to Follow" section based on the service's knowledge of users, including the Web sites they visit.

Investors will pressure Facebook, the public company, to find new ways of making money from users' personal data. If times get hard, can Facebook do that without endangering user privacy?

“If the product is free, you are the product.”

At first glance that little maxim might seem cryptic, but it’s an apt description of the nature of Facebook’s service, and a needed heads-up for anyone who uses it. Although Facebook is a free service, the social networking site acts as a mechanism for capturing highly personal user information--Facebook's real product. That's your information. You are the product.

All of the discussion and speculation surrounding the Facebook IPO over the past month has served as an introduction to the new “personal data economy” for many people. Facebook--and a thousand other smaller companies like it--are in the business of collecting and monetizing personally identifiable information (aka PII).

Ledet, the 20-year-old from Westlake, Louisiana, who was continually praised as one of the best contestants to ever grace the "Idol" stage, received the lowest number of votes from the 90 million votes cast, according to "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest.

Ledet set a record for standing ovations from the judges this season on "Idol"; barely a week went by when he didn't get the judges on their feet after one of his stellar performances.
Google reportedly plans to give multiple mobile device makers early access to its next version of Android in an attempt to create a more robust ecosystem to take on Apple and also to reassure partners that its Motorola Mobility acquisition won't squeeze them out.

The new strategy would be a major shift away from Google's current practice of working with a single maker of smartphones or tablets on a "lead device" based on a new Android release, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

Google's strategy with its Android mobile operating system has already shifted several times over the years. In early 2010, the search giant produced its own co-branded Android-based smartphone, the Nexus One but had shut down that venture by the summer of that year as sales of other Android-based phones began to take off.

Why FCC decided tracking wireless carriers' implementation of bill shock notifications

Why FCC decided tracking wireless carriers' implementation of bill shock notifications

The rapid development of wireless communication in the last few decades has heralded the beginning of an era where nothing is impossible. With the dominance of cell phones, wireless internet and the abundance of internet providers in my area, I can say that communication has undergone a dramatic shift with its implications yet to be fully realized.

Not only have cell phones contributed in making wireless communications so common. The recent expansion seen in wireless internet has introduced an entirely new spectrum of conveniences for the common man. While wireless internet has offered amazing perks like minimizing space and clutter with greater mobility, the social implications and the consequential health hazards have always been a subject of controversy for many.

Like every other technology, the positive aspects are highlighted while the associated costs are often overlooked that come along with all the benefits. In this regard, wireless internet is no exception. Despite the fact that this technology has been around for a little while, there are those who term it as nothing but a nuisance ripping people off their hard-earned money for services that are outrageously expensive.

Bill shock is one of the most common feelings users of wireless internet have been experiencing in the last few months. Most people in my surroundings complain that internet providers in my area do not notify them when their bandwidth limit is reached and keep on charging them heftily for services they had no idea they were using. The result is a bill that proves to be a nightmare for them for days to come.

If you have often mistaken the overwhelming figures on your wireless internet bill for your phone calls, you are not the only one as there are millions rocking in the same boat with you. This does not happen because consumers are not literate enough to understand the bill but because the bill shows such a high value that one is left wondering how it ended up so high.

According to recent research, one in every six mobile subscriber suffers from the bill shock that can be fairly attributed to the incompetency of the nation’s wireless carriers. Subscribers continue using the services without ever knowing that they are being charged extra as the limit has been crossed. It is only justified for wireless users to feel outraged as they have not been notified earlier.

To cater to all such issues and to safeguard consumers against any unjust or undesired costs, the FCC has now decided to issue notifications. Being an endeavor establishing convenience, with this service the consumer will be notified of any potential overages. Similarly, every subscriber will be informed when a specific limit has been reached.

The idea is still in its infancy but with the wireless carriers notifying users of any over-the-top SMS, data or international roaming charges, it is bound to soothe some horrors in the near future. Carriers have already been asked to offer subscribers any two of the four listed services and have been asked to implement all the four categories of notification.

The plan was launched by the Federal Communications Commission in October 2011. The plan attempts to inform customers when the plan limit is exceeding and to offer usage alerts before entitling a user to a service so that the resulting bill does not come as a shock to him/her.

The Federal Communication Commission’s idea soon earned the favor of CTIA. Here it is important to specify that with the wireless association CTIA teaming with the Federal Communication Commission, the prospects of the success of the plan have vastly increased as the Wireless Association CTIA offers services to an overwhelming 97% of all the wireless consumers in the US alone.

The commission officials shed light on their technology explaining that the plan is indeed an endeavor at empowering consumers with information that promises them an improved wireless experience. Since this service will be offered to consumers free of cost, they are going to feel nothing but grateful.

Except for the instant alerts, the commission also plans to build long term customer relationships by offering an online resource where each customer will be able to access data usage information and can predict the bill at the end of the month. With such perks, wireless consumers can put all their billing-related concerns at rest.

This release features crisper fonts, larger profile pics and a friendlier home-screen. In addition, Google worked to make the stream easier to scan and easier on the eyes, with overlays, gradients and other visual elements.

Google+'s original app for iPhone never received much praise, but this latest iteration is, for lack of better words, surprisingly good. Given how unexpectedly sexy this app is, my intuition leads me to believe that the acquihire of Kevin Rose and the Milk team has played a part in this.

This is actually quite likely, due to Google's confirmation that the new hires will focus on "social efforts." That said, designing an entire app would require an absolute ton of work to have happened in just 2 months.
